The brief: Create two books explaining and exploring the typographic and layout principles you have researched in this section. Your books should each take the form of a simple eight-page booklet folded, stapled or stitched. Design the cover and contents for each. When creating your content for both books, be aware of your audience, and how you might want them to engage with your content. While both these books are about typography, make sure you also include images within the text. These could be your own illustrations, photographs, or stand alone typography pieces that accompany your text.
A robust effort for your third assignment. Your research and preparatory work is thorough, and your mockups are clean and well presented. Your good typography book is strong, and it is clear from your use of text and layout that you have gained a well rounded knowledge of typography as well as the skills to apply this knowledge. The bad typography book features some pretty extreme examples of awful design, and therefore achieves its aims very effectively, but I see from your log that you were disappointed with the result and that you were concerned that it didnt appear professional. Essentially this is an exercise in unlearning everything that you had previously covered, which I have no doubt feels odd and counterintuitive, but conducting this kind of exercise can help to cement the knowledge of design and composition that you have acquired in this section of the course. Sometimes it pays to really go wild and have fun with a task without worrying too much about the quality of your result, as this can produce the most surprising outcomes.
To summarise;
Good integration of text and grid elements across each publication.
Extensive preparatory work evident.
Overall your response to this part of the course has been methodical, there is evidence of you taking some creative risks and pushing the development of your digital skills. Your use of typography is coming along nicely, and I would encourage you to continue to make the most of the content of the course by continuing to critically evaluate your response to the tasks as you go along, and push your making where there is opportunity to do so. Make sure you are being thorough in logging your research tasks as some of these appear to be missing from this submission.
I’m happy that the feedback for assignment 3 is so positive. It’s reassuring to know that I didn’t misinterpret what I was supposed to be doing with the bad typography book and that unlearning rules was the right path to take. I don’t think there’s much more to say about it really!
